While the northeastern parts of the country face orange warnings for rain and storms, southern regions such as Seville, Zaragoza, and Córdoba are projected to hit the 40°C mark by the following week. France, which experienced deadly conditions last month, is again bracing for temperatures near 39°C in southwest areas like Bordeaux. In Portugal, temperatures are set to climb starting Saturday, June 20, with some regions potentially crossing the 40°C threshold. Maria João Frada, a meteorologist, underscores that while 35–40°C is expected in the coming days, the most extreme conditions will primarily affect inland areas such as the Douro Valley, Tagus Valley, and Alentejo, with coastal regions likely to remain slightly cooler.
Heatwave Intensifies Across Southern Europe
The June heatwave is intensifying in southern Europe, driven by a persistent high-pressure system from North Africa. This weather pattern is expected to trap heat over regions like Italy, where cities such as Florence may reach 40°C. Even typically milder nations are not immune, as the interior Danube plains of Bulgaria and Romania are forecasted to see temperatures of up to 38°C, while Budapest might experience 36–37°C. The prolonged exposure to high heat is reshaping daily life, with heat advisories now more common and energy demands surging.

The heatwave’s intensity is a stark reminder of the need for more resilient infrastructure and updated emergency protocols to mitigate risks.
Structural Vulnerabilities Exposed
Public infrastructure is under increasing strain as the June heatwave continues. Electrical grids, even in regions unaccustomed to extreme heat, are struggling to meet demand due to widespread use of air conditioning. In northwest Italy, Turin experienced severe blackouts last week, underscoring the vulnerability of power networks to heat-related failures. Similarly, public transport systems, designed for 20th-century thermal conditions, are now facing disruptions as tracks and equipment heat up, affecting reliability and safety.
“Sustained nighttime heat is arguably a greater public health threat than the daytime peak,” Vergini adds. “When lows fail to drop below 20°C and in the worst cases stay above 25°C, the body is denied its vital recovery window, and the cardiovascular system remains under constant strain to cool the core.”
Tropical nights, where temperatures remain above 20°C for 24 hours, are becoming more frequent and are already impacting public services. Schools in France are considering shifting exam schedules to accommodate students struggling with sleep deprivation due to warm nights. Meanwhile, urban areas are experiencing amplified heat due to the urban heat island effect, where asphalt and concrete trap and radiate heat, making cities even more vulnerable during extreme weather events.
As the June heatwave progresses, experts are urging governments and communities to prioritize preparedness. This includes investing in cooling centers, improving early warning systems, and revising building codes to enhance energy efficiency. The heatwave serves as a critical test for Europe’s ability to adapt to increasingly extreme climate conditions, with the potential for long-term consequences on health, economy, and environment.
